I’m looking at buying a 1998 Land Cruiser. Is there anything specific to look out for. The one I’m looking at has 158k miles on it, and is clean. It has been in Utah and AZ it’s whole life, not that rust is a concern on them. Looks like the shocks were replaced and bearings repacked at 95k miles. Any other maintenance items that will be coming up on it or weak points that will start to show their head? They’re asking $9,500 for it which seems a tad high, but it’s at a dealership. I’m thinking I can get them down to $8k. Educate me!

They’re awesome machines, but just make sure you live near a gas station.

Yeah, I’ve been DDing my ‘66 GMC with a modified 350 stuffed in it for a while now, so I'm pretty accustomed to poor gas mileage. It gets maybe 10mpg and only has an 11 gal tank.

Timing belt and water pump every 70k the parts are on Amazon for like 300 bucks they sell a kit for these engines and you’re pretty much good till the end of time if u keeping Doug the belt and pump at the 70k mark every time

Yeah, it's pretty terrible. I drove a lot this week and have had to gas up every day.

Good to know, thanks! I wouldn't have even thought to check if the timing belt had been changed as I thought Toyota used chains in most of their engines.

Here is your starter guide. 1998 is an interesting year because its the first year of the 100 series. It means you get the a343f 4 speed from the 80 series, 4.31 gears and a 2 pinion front diff as well as the non-VVTi 4.7 liter. They can be had relatively cheap because they don’t have some of the more desirable features (and the 4.31 gears with 4 speed really suck down the gas)...BUT...they can also be had with a rear locker which is awesome. Rust IS an issue with these, especially in Utah so check it out, I mean in 2 years mine has gone from rust free to some rust on the bolts and such. Timing belt is due, so is the water pump, but those aren’t dealbreakers, and 8 grand is a NP for that mileage.

There he is! I’ve been searching for your write ups. I'll be sure to look for rust. Thanks!

I have a 2004. Like others have said, the timing belt and waterpump is the big required service at 90k. If you get it, swap out the heater T's right away as well. The deteriorate due to heat and can leave you stranded. Cheap fix though. I highly recommend the Slee guide for info on 100 series. Check out IH8Mud also. Lots of good info on the forums, including FAQs.

Anything to look out for on the LX470, or are they pretty much the same truck with a fancier interior? I found a ‘99 with about 186k miles.

Check to see if it has ahc and if it does has it been serviced
